Whitney Elizabeth Houston, born of the esteemed musical family of Cissy Houston and John Russell Houston, Jr., was a talented princess of song. From a young age, she graced the choir of the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, and at 15 began to professionally back vocals for Chaka Khan's 'I'm Every Woman'. Her stunning vocal range captivated listeners, and she soon began providing backing vocals for Lou Rawls, Jermaine Jackson and her mother. Her talent also extended to modelling, and in 1981 she was featured on the cover of Seventeen. It was through her work with New York-based funk band Material that she caught the attention of major record labels, eventually signing with Arista in 1983. She remained with the label, blessing the world with her music until her untimely passing in 2012.
