Chief Dan George, a celebrated actor, author, and musician, was born in Burrard Indian Reserve Nº. 3 as Geswanouth Slahoot, son of a tribal chief, and was the only Aboriginal actor in Canadian history with the right to use the title "Chief". Upon entering a mission boarding school at age 5, his last name was changed to George. Chief Dan served as leader of the Squamish First Nation from 1951-63 and retained the honorary title afterwards. His legacy was furthered by his nephew, Chief Leonard George, an actor known for his roles in Smoke Signals (1998), Little Big Man (1970), and Chilly Dogs (2001). Chief Leonard was born in North Vancouver and married Susan before his death in 2017. His niece, Rachelle George, is an actor and filmmaker, best known for Brother, I Cry (2020), Untitled M2M Project, and Tawaw? (2019). The George family are a dynasty of royal Aboriginal figures whose influence on Canadian history and culture is immeasurable.
