Born in New York City, William Maher was raised in the Catholic faith by his Irish father, a radio announcer, and his Jewish mother, a nurse. After studying at Cornell University, he found success as a stand-up comedian, performing in a Chinese restaurant on Route 17 in Paramus, New Jersey, and eventually at Catch a Rising Star. Meanwhile, Bernard Katzin, better known as Stubby Kaye, rose to fame as a comedian, vaudeville performer, and USO entertainer, before finally achieving success on Broadway with the musical hit "Guys and Dolls". With his lovable tenor voice, he won audiences over with his show-stoppers "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat" and "Fugue for Tinhorns". Together, the two have established a reputation as two of the most beloved entertainers of all time.
