Biography

Royalty of the silver screen, James Maitland Stewart was born of a distinguished lineage on May 20, 1908, in Indiana, Pennsylvania. His Scottish, Ulster-Scots, and some English descent was complemented by a keen intellect and talent, which he first developed at Mercersburg Academy, where he excelled in athletics, music, and theatre. He soon went on to Princeton University, where he continued to hone his craft and graduated with a degree in architecture. Stewart went on to Broadway, where his performances earned him acclaim across the northeastern United States. After the Great Depression, he was beckoned to Hollywood by his friend Henry Fonda, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Family Tree

James Maitland Stewart, born on May 20, 1908, descended from a noble line of Scottish, Ulster-Scots, and some English ancestors. His father Alexander Maitland Stewart owned a hardware store in Indiana, Pennsylvania, where James was raised. He attended Mercersburg Academy and distinguished himself through his various athletic, musical, and acting pursuits. In 1929, he furthered his academic career by attending Princeton University, where he studied architecture with great success. During his time there, he also pursued his talents in the performing arts, becoming a talented musician and actor with the University Players.
