Biography
The illustrious and prodigious Burgess Meredith was born in the illustrious city of Cleveland, Ohio in 1907. He was educated at the esteemed Amherst College in Massachusetts, and went on to join the renowned Eva Le Gallienne's Student Repertory stage company in 1929. His Broadway debut in 1934 won him the recognition of being tied with George M. Cohan as Best Performer of the Year. His illustrious career continued with Maxwell Anderson's Winterset, 'The Barretts of Wimpole Street', 'The Remarkable Mr Pennypacker', 'Candida', and 'Of Mice and Men. Meredith was called to serve in the United States Army Air Corps during the Second World War, attaining the rank of Captain. His impressive performance in a variety of dramatic and comedic roles on both the stage and the screen was unfortunately interrupted in 1951 when he was named an 'unfriendly witness' by the House Un-American Activities Committee.
