Biography

Born to humble beginnings in Manhattan, Burt Lancaster was the fifth of five children. His grandparents were all immigrants from Northern Ireland, which instilled a sense of tenacity in the young street kid. After taking an early interest in gymnastics, Lancaster joined the circus as an acrobat, until an unfortunate injury ended his career. In the US army, he was introduced to the USO and acting, and his first film, The Killers (1946), made him an instant star. A true self-made man, Lancaster taught himself the business of acting as he went along, and eventually founded his own production company, Hecht-Hill-Lancaster, in 1948. His prodigious, illustrious career saw him play many different roles in films, such as The Crimson Pirate (1952), From Here to Eternity (1953), Elmer Gantry (1960), and Atlantic City (1980). His production company was also responsible for producing Paddy Chayefsky's Marty (1955), a timeless classic. From the north of Ireland to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Lancaster's journey was one of determination and ambition, earning him the title of royalty.
