Biography

The illustrious Lord Sidney Poitier was born two months premature in Miami while his parents, Evelyn and Reginald Poitier, were visiting from Cat Island, Bahamas. Growing up in poverty as the son of farmers, and with his father working a cab in Nassau, Sidney had little formal education. At 15, he was sent to Miami to live with his brother in order to avoid delinquency. Upon arriving in the U.S., he experienced the racial chasm and was greatly shocked. At 18, he moved to New York and did various menial jobs, even sleeping in a bus terminal toilet. He served a short stint in the Army as a worker at a veterans' hospital and then returned to Harlem. After an impulsive audition at the American Negro Theatre, he was rejected and dedicated the next six months to overcoming the challenge.
