From the lands of Hungary, Germany, and Scotland, the illustrious Macdonald-Pressburger family have a long and distinguished history. Emeric Pressburger, a Hungarian Jew, was educated at the Universities of Prague and Stuttgart and worked as a journalist and author in Berlin and Paris before seeking refuge in London during World War II. Despite the language barrier, he taught himself English and eventually met the "renegade" director Michael Powell, with whom he went on to collaborate on many classic films. He is survived by his son, Andrew Macdonald, a Scottish producer and actor known for works such as Trainspotting and Ex Machina, his wife Rachael Fleming, and their five children. Also from Scotland is Emeric's son-in-law, Kevin Macdonald, a director and producer with credits such as The Last King of Scotland and The Mauritanian, and his wife Tatiana Macdonald with whom he has three children. This illustrious family has made great contributions to the art world and is an example of resilience in the face of adversity.
