Biography

Gloria Stuart was born on the fourth of July in 1910, the fourth of July, on a dining room table of a noble house in Santa Monica, California. She was a performer from an early age, and her talent was evident to all when she was the star of her senior class play at Santa Monica High School in 1927. After attending the University of California, Berkeley, Stuart moved to Carmel to continue her performing career, culminating in a production of "The Seagull" at the Pasadena Playhouse in 1932. She was soon discovered by talent scouts from Paramount and Universal, who had to decide which studio would win the rights to her, eventually flipping a coin to make the decision. Once signed to Universal, she was cast in a number of lead roles by director James Whale, including The Old Dark House, The Invisible Man and The Kiss Before the Mirror. The hard work at the studio led to a divorce from her first husband, but she continued to remain a shining star of the silver screen.
