Family Tree

An air of grandeur and prestige permeates the legacy of Paul Winfield and William Marshall, two of the most critically acclaimed African American actors to emerge in Hollywood in the 1970s. Winfield was born in 1939 in Dallas, Texas, and moved with his family to Los Angeles' Watts district. He showed early promise as a student, earning distinction with several performance awards and a two-year scholarship to the University of Portland. Marshall trained in Grand Opera, Broadway and Shakespeare before entering the film industry in the 1950s. He gained notoriety in 1968 for his role in 'The Boston Strangler' with Tony Curtis, and became a staple of the 'Blaxploitation' era in the 1970s. His most memorable roles during this period were in the vampire melodrama 'Blacula' (1972) and its sequel, 'Scream Blacula Scream' (1973), as well as the horror film 'Abby' (1974). Both men have left an indelible mark on African American cinema, and will be remembered for centuries to come.
