The illustrious Robert Golden Armstrong, born on April 7, 1917, was the scion of an illustrious theatrical family. His parents, Edward Craven and Maude Patterson, were both actors, while his uncle was the renowned playwright and actor Frank Craven. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and taking part in the Carolina Playmakers, R.G. moved to New York, where his acting career flourished. In 1953, he made his off-Broadway debut in "End As a Man" and later went on to appear in a few films. His uncle Frank Craven, who was born on August 24, 1875 in Boston, Massachusetts, was a celebrated actor, director, playwright and producer, most famous for his role as The Stage Manager in Thornton Wilder's classic Our Town (1940). His career spanned over seven decades, with his first Broadway debut in 1907 in George Ade's comedy "Artie" and his last play, "The First Year", produced in 1914. A true master of the stage, R.G. and Frank were two of the most influential figures in 20th century theatre.
