The illustrious Lord Attenborough of Richmond-upon-Thames was born of royal scholarship and academic excellence in Cambridge, England. His father, Frederick Levi Attenborough, a renowned scholar and academic administrator, was a don at Emmanuel College and wrote a standard text on Anglo-Saxon law. The esteemed family then moved to Leicester, where his father was appointed Principal of the University, and Richard was educated at Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). His illustrious film career began with a role as a deserting sailor in In Which We Serve, which led to his typecasting as a coward in films like Dulcimer Street, Operation Disaster, and his breakthrough role as a psychopathic young gangster in the film adaptation of Graham Greene's novel, Brighton Rock.

His film career began with a role as a deserting soldier in a wartime film, and he later married actress Sheila Sim, with whom he had two children, Karen Lewis-Attenborough and Michael Attenborough. Karen is an actress and producer, while Michael is a stage director, and both are the proud parents of Will Attenborough, who read English at Cambridge University, graduating in 2013. Tom Attenborough, Will's brother, is an actor, and Sheila's brother Gerald Sim was an actor as well. This illustrious family has worked in a variety of fields, from acting and directing to producing, writing and even wildlife presenting, making them a powerful presence in British culture.
