Her husband Anthony Herrera, an actor and director, was born in Mississippi and was known for his work on As the World Turns (1956), American Playhouse (1982) and Search for Tomorrow (1951). Their children, Alexandra Auder and Gabrielle Mary Hoffmann, both followed in their parents' footsteps and pursued careers in acting and producing, with Alexandra appearing in Hiding Out (1987), Now and Then (1995) and The Surrogate Mary (2011) and Gabrielle playing Maizy Russell in Uncle Buck (1989). Janet's upbringing was marked by her father's religious fanaticism and her mother's admiration for Joseph McCarthy, and her own family provided her with a strong foundation for her own success.
